Is anyone else tired of the obstructionist politics of the left?
During the last years of the bush administration, americans were bombarded with media messages about the firing of us attorneys. The stories were repeated so often and loudly that the facts were lost: us attorneys are political appointees, and can be fired by the president at will. He needs no reason or justification.
Likewise, the "debate" over the iraq war was renewed today, when hans blix (you can't make this stuff up) called the assertions that hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction "absurd." Coming from the head of the un, this is a comical statement.
At the end of the first gulf war, the un imposed requirements on hussein to cooperate with un weapons inspectors. For over eight years, hussein obstructed efforts by the un to verify whether he possessed banned weapons. Every knows he had chemical weapons -- he used them to kill tens of thousands of kurds. The onus was on hussein to allow inspectors to verify those weapons had been destroyed or were no longer in his possession.
Everyone seems to forget the decade of un inspectors being harrassed or obstructed by hussein -- or the frequent "no fly zone" violations and responding military actions.
Like the story about the us attorneys, the media and left repeat the fact that no weapons of mass destruction were found in iraq as if it proved the war was illegal. The war was justified by the mere fact that hussein was violating the terms of the ceasefire by blocking the un inspectors. Period. This is ignoring the fact that hussein was a brutal dictator and mass murderer who deserved to be overthrown, regardless of the status of his weapons program.
That's not to disguise the fact that bush mishandled the iraq war. But the war itself was justified by hussein's refusal to submit to the un-mandated inspections. For blix to ignore the weakness of the un in forcing compliance and attack bush is, to use his own words, absurd.
