As most americans are waking up to dangers of massive debt, the democrats in power continue pushing more and more spending as a fix-all for the economy. While democrats say this latest spending is "entirely paid for" by cuts to food stamp programs (?!?) and taxes on multinational corporations, the impression remains that the democrats seem to think that government spending can solve all the problems of the us economy. Since the hyped "stimulus" bill has completely failed to stimulate the economy, one has to ask if the democrats are capable of learning from past mistakes.
As a former leftist myself, I can answer that question. The left ideology is driven a near-religious zealotry. Their belief in collectivism is as sacrosanct to them as any belief held by muslims or christians. And in a confrontation between reality and their dogmatic beliefs, leftists will ignore reality and continue following their dogmatic programming.
Much of the blame goes to the public schools and the media. As a child, I grew up reading stories of how franklin roosevelt "saved america" and ended the depression. It was a couple decades later that I learned that roosevelt did NOT end the depression. All of roosevelt's spending and government driven economic plans did not restore capitalism. The nation was mired in depression until the massive mobilization of world war 2.
The left ignores the reality that government spending does not spur the economy, simply because they believe that government spending will spur the economy. In a battle between their dogmatic beliefs and evidence, their dogmatic beliefs win.
In reality, massive government spending actually harms the economy. As long as america exists as a free market economy, every dollar taken from the free market and given to the government costs jobs. While reasonable people recognize that some tax burden is necessary, the unsustainable spending of the past few years has actually hindered the recovery. Leftists did not learn that lesson in the 1930s, and they still have not learned. I doubt the mass of leftists ever will break free of their indoctrination. But if america does not set aside their agenda, and vote them out of office, this short term crisis will evolve into a generational reliance on government programs, and an intentional shrinking of the free market economy.
